MYOPIA MANAGEMENT

Myopia is the scientific term for short-sightedness. Short-sightedness means having difficulty seeing things that are further away. Most people are not aware, but short-sightedness is a worldwide epidemic. The numbers are massively on the rise. For example:

  • The proportion of young people with short-sightedness in the UK has more than doubled over the last 50 years.

  • Children are becoming short-sighted at a younger age.

  • By 2050, the prevalence of short-sightedness globally is predicted to be half  of the world’s population.

This is bad news because being short-sighted can greatly increase the chances of serious eye problems later in life. The eye conditions that are more likely include:

  • Cataract

  • Glaucoma

  • Retinal Detachment

  • Myopic Macular Degeneration

It's not all doom and gloom, though, the good news is that there are now state of the art glasses and contact lenses that can help. Our optometrist, Graham, is an expert in myopia management (previously known as myopia control) and is fully accredited to prescribe various solutions to help slow down short-sightedness. See this blog post for more information about myopia management.
